ANNUAL REPORT 2012

(In memory of Dr Charles David)

One of the most significant achievements for Guernsey Gulls in 2012 took place behind the scenes, with Dr Charles David of the Guernsey Biological Records Centre firstly establishing modern electronic databases for all our gull records, and then transferring the large volume of existing records from the old programme to the new platforms. It is hard to overstate the value of this work, because without a modern database, which is easy to interrogate and has the ability to enter data and reply appropriately to observers in an efficient manner, all our colour ringing projects would be under serious threat. Guernsey Gulls owes Charles a huge debt of thanks for accomplishing this large and complex task.

If that was one of the top highlights of 2012, then there is no doubt about the lowest point. I was shocked one Saturday morning at the end of September to get back home from my regular session recording colour ringed gulls at Chouet Landfill to receive news that the previous day Charles had died from a heart attack, at the top of Sark’s infamous harbour hill. This news was really hard to take, particularly as only a couple of days earlier we had been laughing and joking together while reviewing some of the last gull data to be transferred.

The memorial service held on Lihou Headland on Saturday 13 October was a very heartfelt and warm way for the several hundred attendees to say farewell to one of the Channel Islands’ foremost botanists, entomologists and general all round natural historians, not just of his generation but of all time. While others worked much more closely than me with Charles on many aspects of the Islands’ natural history, my abiding memories of Charles are not of the extremely clever highly knowledgeable scientist that he was, but of a man who never lost the child-like ability to marvel at the wonders of the natural world, and to impart that infectious joy to anyone who was in the field with him. Charles will be sorely missed, and it is a small token of my respect and gratitude to him that I dedicate this report to him and his memory.

In the field, 2012 was a deeply rewarding year, which added more than 13,000 colour ring sightings to the gull study databases. For the first time Lesser Black-backed Gull topped the list with 6,852 reports, although Herring Gull was once again very well represented with 5,484 records. There were also 728 Great Black-backed Gull observations, and a handful of sightings for Yellow-legged, Mediterranean and Black-headed Gulls.

Our efforts to colour ring a reasonable sample of full-grown and nestling gulls during the breeding season, was supplemented with a small amount of winter ringing, and effort was maintained in recording colour ringed gulls on a regular basis in Guernsey. By the end of the year we had colour-ringed another 1,962 gulls, bringing the grand total of gulls colour ringed since 2008 to 6,907. The 2012 total (with grand total over the period in brackets) was comprised Herring Gull 1,037 (4,084), Lesser Black-backed Gull 872 (2,587), Great Black-backed Gull 51 (233), Yellow-legged Gull one (two) and Black-headed Gull one (one).

For the fourth year Paul Roper and members of the North Thames Gull Group joined our small team at Guernsey Gulls to run a week of cannon netting at Chouet Landfill. The landfill staff and management were as helpful as ever, and largely as a result of this, and the unusually (for the summer of 2012!) dry weather, we were able to take catches on all six possible days.  This year we were particularly focussed not on achieving a large number of gulls ringed, but on targeting Lesser Black-backed Gulls (LBBGs) as our principal study species.  By the end of the week we had caught 1,091 gulls (including retraps and controls), and our ratio of LBBG to Herring (526:553) was a truly outstanding achievement. Along with 11 Great Black-backed Gulls we also managed to catch a single Yellow-legged Gull.

On a smaller scale, we took regular gull catches in our garden through the year, but mainly concentrating on the spring and summer periods. In this way we colour ringed another 36 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 562 Herring Gulls, three Great Black-backed Gulls and the only Black-headed Gull of the year.

Once again a small sample of nesting adult LBBGs was colour-ringed on Sark (21 birds) and Burhou, Alderney (51). While small in number these are very valuable records because we know the exact breeding colony for these birds.

The very poor weather with frequent strong winds and rain throughout the late spring and summer made all seabird monitoring work particularly difficult this year. Many Herring Gull chicks fledged before we could ring them, but 90 such gulls were colour-ringed, mainly in the colonies on Lihou and Jethou. Thankfully, after last year’s virtual complete breeding failure of Lesser Black-backed Gulls across the Channel Islands, birds were successful in raising chicks this year. While it was in no way a “bumper” year 202 pulli were colour ringed on Burhou and a further 60 chicks on Sark. Great Black-backed Gulls seemed to fare worst this year (for unknown reasons), and only 36 chicks were ringed. The ringing totals (both metal rings fitted and colour rings fitted) are shown in Appendix 1.

Observer effort recording colour-ringed gulls in Guernsey remained very strong in 2012, and as a result more than 10,000 local sightings were added to the databases. Most of the sightings were taken either at Chouet landfill, or the nearby beaches, but there was also a welcome increase in reports from other Guernsey observers further afield in Guernsey.

Coupled with this activity in Guernsey, was another large volume of sightings of Bailiwick of Guernsey-ringed gulls in the other Channel Islands and abroad ranging from Northern England through France and Iberia and even into North-west Africa. A small selection of some of these sightings is included in Appendix 2.

Given the time spent in the field in Guernsey recording colour ringed gulls, it was inevitable that birds ringed in other countries would be observed, and this proved to be the case with a fine series of such records for all three large gulls, in addition to a very few records for the smaller gulls migrating through, or wintering on, Guernsey. A selection of such records is included at Appendix 3.

Another very enjoyable aspect of the gull studies in the Bailiwick is the opportunity to meet with fellow gull researchers to share information and learn from each others’ experiences. From 16-19 February 2012 Catherine and I attended the 11th International Gull Meeting in Zagreb, Croatia. The Conference had a very varied and informative series of presentations from a number of gull enthusiasts from around Europe. These talks covered areas as diverse as ecology and migration to identification of some very difficult races. I was very pleased to make a presentation on the gull research projects being run in the Bailiwick of Guernsey.

At the end of the Conference I was fortunate enough to participate in some cannon netting of gulls at the landfill site on the edge of the city. This session was organised jointly between local gull expert Luka Jurinovik and Paul Roper (North Thames Gull Group). It was very valuable to be able to handle Caspian Gulls of all ages, as well as Yellow-legged Gulls. We even caught the first Lesser Black-backed Gull to be ringed in Croatia.

Apart from this trip, Catherine and I also took our holidays in places which held significant gull interests. In early April we spent a few days in Normandy, France. During this time we made a day trip to the Chausey Islands, situated 17 km west of Granville Port. Having recorded more than 100 different Great Black-backed Gulls in Guernsey which have been ringed as chicks in the Chausey archipelago, it was especially nice to see the breeding islets at first hand.

Later in the year, we followed the gulls south with trips to The Algarve, Portugal in October and Agadir, Morocco in December. Guernsey colour-ringed Lesser Black-backed Gulls were seen on every day of the trip to the Algarve, Portugal. In total I made 33 observations of 21 different Guernsey birds - making the trip extremely successful. Based for nine days at Ferragudo, near Portimão in the Algarve, I managed to record gulls each morning and late afternoon mainly at three sites - Portimão Fish Port, Porto do Lagos Landfill and Quarteira Beach.

191 observations of 142 different colour-ringed LBBGs were made in total with birds from Scotland (four), England (24), Wales (six), Guernsey (21), Iceland (one), Germany (seven), Norway (11), Denmark (five), The Netherlands (33), Belgium (16), France (eight), Spain (two) and Portugal (four).
19 different Yellow-legged Gulls were also recorded as follows: - Algeria (one), Spain (five) and Portugal (13). Two Audouin's Gulls originated from Corsica and Spain respectively, while the nine White Storks recorded were from Portugal (seven), France (one) and Germany (one). A Pied Avocet ringed in Brittany, France was also seen, while the origin of a Greater Flamingo has yet to be traced.

The weather was absolutely superb - wall to wall sunshine and very warm - it was the summer we never got in Guernsey this year. I was also very pleased to meet up with local ornithologist Carlos Pacheco (who regularly finds Guernsey Gulls in Portugal) and also Irish birder Michael Davis (who reported some of my very first LBBGs from Quarteira...and has done so every year since 2009!). All in all, it was a most relaxing and highly successful trip.

The visit to Agadir was one of the most successful gull watching trips I’ve ever made. Although a holiday, it was not a coincidence that the legendary small beach at “Anza” just happens to be a stone’s throw from Agadir. I was fortunate enough to visit Anza two years ago, when the sight of so many gulls feeding on fish waste was truly incredible – perhaps as many as 30,000 Lesser Black-backed Gulls were on the beach on some days. This time I was even more awe-struck by the sheer volume of birds, and the incredible views that can be obtained. Of course I was there to try to see colour-ringed gulls, especially from Guernsey. I was not to be disappointed with seven different Guernsey LBBGs. Over the week I saw 239 different colour-ringed Lesser Black-backed Gulls, mostly from Norway (65), The Netherlands (64), Belgium (28), England (28) and Denmark (18), but birds were seen from 11 different European countries. Amongst the Audouin’s Gulls wintering on the beaches north of Agadir, I recorded 22 colour-ringed birds from southern Spain. Although numbers of small gulls were very modest I also observed Mediterranean Gulls from Poland, Hungary and France and Black-headed Gulls from Spain (two).

In 2012, largely at the initiative of Chris Mourant, we included a non-gull seabird species to our colour ringing studies, when we colour-ringed 40 Great Cormorant chicks on their breeding colonies near Herm and Lihou Islands. The earliest breeding season we had ever seen caught us out to some extent, and this coupled with frequent high winds, rough seas and difficulty with boat availability meant that we had a very frustrating first season with this work. Nevertheless, the ringed birds did provide a local sighting in mid-summer at St Saviour’s Reservoir, with another bird in Anetz, Loire-Atlantique, France by the autumn.

Once again the Channel Islands Co-operative Society Ltd was the principal sponsor of the gull research in Guernsey, but valuable contributions were also received from La Société Guernesiaise, La Société Sercquiaise and Dave Murray. We are very grateful for this most valuable financial help. In terms of practical help with the ringing, I am particularly indebted to Chris Mourant, Jamie and Michelle Hooper, Catherine Veron, Phil Alexander and Carolyn Brouard. Once again my sincere thanks to Paul Roper and his colleagues from the North Thames Gull Group for giving up a week of their time to cannon net gulls at Chouet Landfill. Other Guernsey birders also give invaluable help with this activity. Access to Chouet Landfill is by kind permission of the States Public Services Department and States Works, and the management and staff at the landfill have been as helpful as ever with our gull studies at the site. Risto Juvaste kindly made the colour ring plates used in the gull studies in 2012.

Much of our breeding seabird monitoring (including gulls) is only possible with the permission of the landowners (e.g. States of Guernsey – Lihou Island and South Coast cliffs etc, States of Alderney – Burhou and Sir Peter Ogden - Jethou). We are indebted to all of them for their continued support of our research, as well as to the Alderney Wildlife Trust and its staff (including Manager, Roland Gauvain and Ecologist, James Allison) for their help on the ground with the ringing work and logistics in visiting Burhou. Other boatmen also helped us to access the islets including the staff of Jethou Island, Andy Cook (Sark) and Chris Veron and Robbie Stanford (Herm).

I continue to be very grateful to Rich and Margaret Austin for administering the Channel Islands Bird Ringing Scheme. The gull colour ringing projects have added immensely to their work load (especially Margaret’s), but this has been taken on board with good cheer and with much support and encouragement for our research.  I must also acknowledge the help of Colin Le Conte and Jean-Luc Jean of Digimap, for transferring electronically the last data files that Charles had prepared for the new databases. Finally...like most colour ringing projects, ours are heavily reliant on observers, particularly along the western seaboard of Europe, who take the time and trouble to record and report their sightings of our colour ringed gulls. There appears to be a growing band of such bird watchers and gull enthusiasts and I should like to record my thanks to each and every one of them.

It was one of only a handful of chicks to have fledged in the Channel Islands in the very poor breeding season of 2011).
